4 Seasons

Posted By Snow at 11/30/2010 3 comments

Spring seems like a burst of life after winter

The 4 seasons — spring, summer, autumn & winter — happen when the intensity of sunlight changes on Earth due to the tilt of the Earth as it circles the sun. In the summer, the northern hemisphere is more exposed to direct sunlight; while in winter it is less exposed to it.

The changes of season shows a change in temperature changes our whole environment. The weather changes. Animals hibernate WIKI or migrate. WIKI Plants become dormant. WIKI

A change in temperature really affects us.

So what will happen if Earth becomes extremely warm? It had been extremely warm. So it is not always about will it happen, because it already happened. During the Permian WIKI period, global warming is a suspect for our planet's greatest mass extinction - the Great Dying. REF

So knowing our history, scientists ponder our future on this planet. Our human activities, like burning fossil fuels (vehicles, industries) & deforestation may heat the Earth. [Q30:41] Earth is the only livable planet for us, and a hotter Earth is like Venus. WIKI Venus' surface temperature alone is 467°C. So it's important for us to care for the environment.

And (in) the alternation of night and day, and (in) what Allah sends down from the sky of provision and gives life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness, and (in His) directing of the winds are signs for a people who reason.
[Holy Quran 45:5]

Anyway like the seasons, life on Earth had lived & died & lived again. It has happened. After the Permian died, Earth was resurrected with the next generation of species — the dinosaurs. Then the dinosaurs WIKI died as well, and the Earth resurrects again with humans.

It's amazing. The resurrection.
Que sera sera. I seek refuge in Allah SWT from errors.

Summa Cum Laude

New England is famous for its universities
oh to be an MIT student in autumn

Regarding places in the university, I'm currently in the view that places should be awarded by merit. University should be a place that spearheads knowledge, with people who have the abilities to safeguard its distinction of higher learning. [Q58:11] And by higher learning, I mean how Bezier equations (P(u,v) = ∑ ∑ Bi,n(u) Bj,m(v) Ki,j) are higher than basic multiplications (3 x 7 = 21).

The university should safeguard this distinction, and benefit society with its wisdom. E.g.:
Research in physics resulted in telecommunication devices | AG Bell
Research in medicine resulted in new treatment, vaccines | radiology, stem cells
Computer technology aids in various fields, e.g: law enforcement | graphics
And the woman who made history in higher education is - Marie Curie. She was the first woman to win 2 Nobel Prizes. But as destiny have it... even with the accomplishments, she was not rich. Due to her research, she even fell ill by being exposed to radiation. But the richness is, her research & sacrifices still benefit us till this very day - through various applications in medical diagnosis, cancer treatment. Her Curie Institute lives on. Cancer Care lives on.

In Islam richness is in good deeds, so this is the way to be rich.

Wealth and children are (but) adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds
are better to your Lord for reward and better for (one's) hope.
[Holy Quran 18:46] | Q59:18

Cinderella

Posted By Snow at 10/16/2010 0 comments

In the Kingdom, time around midnight | happiest place
I saw the clock tower, but I can't remember if its the Abraj

I've read some people say the Cinderella story is unhealthy. But I love her patience in adversity! She was an orphan. She was lonely & unloved. Her only friends are animals. People call her names, treated very lowly.

She had to work hard, while the pampered have fun.
But she still remain good & loving.

BTW, I don't wanna sound cheesy but I'm happy I rushed out of Masjidil Haram barefoot to catch my coach. (◠v◠) I didn't realize that it was like Cinderella until after this Ramadhan. It was a sad night, but kinda funny when I looked back.

The King of the Universe, and I the servant. Forever & ever.

Give thanks to the Lord, Allah SWT
for He is good His love endures forever

Visible & Invisible

Posted By Snow at 10/14/2010 1 comments

Visible light is the rainbow part in the EM Spectrumvideo

I have worked with illumination in Computer Graphics. It is basically coloring scenes, like in the movie Toy Story, only using math to figure out the shades of colors.

In real life it is lighting. With light, we can see the colors of things.

The Visible Light

OK, imagine there are particles of light flying around you all the time. How they move is classed in the EM spectrum. And your eyes can see one very small class of this spectrum — visible light. It is the rainbow part, so we see visible light as colors of the rainbow.

So, when you look at a tree. What happens is, particles of visible light from that tree goes to your eyes. Then your brain process its colors, and images the tree in your mind. When you look in the mirror, particles of visible light from you is reflected back to your eyes. Then your brain images that refection in your mind.

Light Travels

Particles of light flies around you all the time. Light speed is the fastest known in the universe — 186,000 miles per second — it can circle the Earth 7.5 times in a second. It's like the universe's speed limit.

Darkness

Then, what happens when there is no visible light? In this case your eyes do not process any colors — so you see nothing — which is darkness. [Q36:37] Like this tree, it blocks the light. So the area without it has no colors, it is dark. Basically, darkness is the absence of light.

Illusions

But on a funny occurrence, when there is visible light — but its path is bended — you see things that does not exist. Like the mirage. This happens when visible light from the sky bends as it travels between cold and warm air. This bending produces a displaced image, so you see water that does not exist, because of the blueness from the sky.

The Invisible

All the things that our eyes can see, thanks to the rainbow colors of visible light, is actually a very small class in the EM spectrum. There are other spectrums around us — radiowaves, microwaves, infra red, ultra violet, x rays, gamma rays — which your eyes cannot see. They are invisible.
And you use these invisible spectrum when you listen to the radio, watch TV, use your smartphone, surf the internet, remote lock your car, microwave food etc. The invisible exists around us and it is HUGE. If EM spectrum is a reel of film stretching 2,500 miles, the visible spectrum is only one tiny frame and the rest is invisible. | video

So just bcoz you can't see it, does not mean it is not around you.
Muslims has a term called ghaib (غيب : unseen). It is true.

Indeed, Allah knows the unseen (aspects) of the heavens and the earth.
And Allah is Seeing of what you do
| Holy Quran 49:18

The hanbok 한복 and hanfu 漢服
I ancient dresses

Isn't the dresses lovely? Still, the length needs adjustment, & of course for muslims, the additional hijab. I especially love the green dress.

Give Me A Sign

Do you understand me?

Hi friends! Have you heard... Alexander Graham Bell wanted to help the deaf. So he experimented on sound & discovered the telephone! Still, I'm sorry if my question is too much - but do the deaf even use the old telephone? Haaa haaa... OK never mind... bcoz now we have video cellphones & SMS.

After Alexander discovered the telephone, the telephone network is built across the world to send sound. Then this network is added with the modem to send data (& called the internet). Then the network became wireless & you can play the tablet while walking around.

Alexander also discovered the photophone, which sends sound on a beam of light. This pioneered the fiber optic communication & you can now download data from the internet in a blink of an eye, bcoz light travels very fast.

AG Bell launching the
telephone network line
from New York to Chicago in 1892

Loving The Deaf & Hard Of Hearing

OK Alexander is not deaf, but his mother was deaf. [Q16:78] & he even married a deaf woman, Mabel Gardiner Hubbard - as a wedding gift, he gave her almost all of his shares in the newly created Bell Telephone Company. It's the company that would become AT&T - the 13th largest company in the world as listed by Forbes in 2010.

& after his passing 88 years ago, AG Bell lives on - aiding the deaf & hard of hearing.

Old Writing

The writings of the malay archipelago
Left: Kawi with sanskrit | Laguna Copperplate
Right: Jawi with arabic | Terengganu Stone

It's fascinating how the Malay language have many Arabic words. Kitab (كتاب : book), khidmat (خدمة : service), ilmu (علم : knowledge), loghat (لغة : language), rezeki (رزق : livelihood), sihat (صحة : healthy) ... [ref] Even the ancient Malay script - the Jawi - is of Arabic letters! Perhaps the Malays started using it since the arrival of Islam, around the 12-13th century. | more...

If I may ... I have a suspicion that the Sanskrit roots from the Israelite. But I can't verify it. I can only wonder about the Israelites spreading into nations throughout the earth. Since Malays seems to known heaven & hell - in Sanskrit - did somebody taught them before the Arabs?
